Drake

Raven nervously wiped her palms on her pants as the three of them approached the Glass. Vance had left their lives as quickly as he’d come, but Drake figured it might be for the best. They could have used his expertise, but Vance wasn’t ready for this new world.

Sage tugged on her leash, sniffing the invisible barrier centering the platform. She peered up at Drake, seeking guidance, and he set a comforting hand on her fur.

He powered on the devices, linking them, and chose his destination. Drake ensured they were traveling to the proper plane, and not another time or dimension. He’d seen that once now, and never wanted to experience that again.

“Everyone ready?” Drake waited until Nia and Raven agreed, and he activated the Glass, choosing the most consistent location in Tucson. The portal shone brightly, and Nia proceeded without hesitation. Raven went next, her eyes wide and unblinking. Sage growled, and Drake had to coax her into the Glass.

When they emerged in Tucson, he didn’t expect to be greeted by anyone.

“John, what’s going on?” Drake asked the man from New York.

He wore a button-up with yellow flowers on it, but it did little to take away from his menacing glare. John aimed his rifle at Drake, Nia, and Raven. “Where are you coming from?”

Drake stepped in front of the women, resting his hand on his own weapon. “John, put it down.”

John’s cheek twitched. “No. Cedric thought someone might access this, but he didn’t think it would be you two.” His gaze flashed to Raven, as if he just noticed they’d brought someone else. “Who’s this?”

“Raven. She’s Helen’s sister, and you’re pointing a gun at her,” Nia said. She moved around Drake and reached for the rifle, shoving the barrel away.

John finally relaxed and gave them an apologetic grin. “Things have been tense around here.”

“How so?” Drake glanced around the vacant road. He gazed in Main Street’s direction to find a few people using the sidewalk.

“It’s better if it comes from the Councillor,” John said.

“Cedric’s out of his coma?” Drake asked.

John’s nod indicated there was more to the story. “He’ll want to see you.”

“I should talk to Britt and Ransom before anything. Have we heard from Will and Peggy?” Drake inquired.

John ignored his questions. “Right this way.” He led them to a golf cart with two rows and took the driver’s seat. Drake went next to him, while Sage jumped onto the bench behind, between Nia and Raven. Everything told Drake to hide the alien device and tablet, and he slid the pack to Nia when John turned to his left.

Nia must have understood his intention, because she tossed it into the bushes near the library. Raven glanced in that direction but kept her mouth closed. Drake had to trust that she’d noticed the power shift transpiring in El Futuro. Raven had been alone for months, but she still seemed acutely aware of the situation. His fate was resting in her palm, even if she didn’t know it.

His heart rate increased as they neared the brewery.
